1.No se pueden comer estos aguacates porque _________ verdes.
Correct answer: D — están
Why: **Translate the sentence:** *These avocados are not ready to eat yet because they are still unripe.*
This question tests the difference between the Spanish verbs **ser** and **estar**. Although both mean **"to be"** in English, they are used differently.
1. **Ser** is used for characteristics that are considered permanent or inherent, such as nationality, innate characteristics, and color.
2. **Estar** is used for temporary conditions or states that can change, such as emotions, location, and certain physical conditions.
In this sentence, the speaker wants to express that the avocados are **still unripe**. Since the ripeness of fruit is a temporary condition that changes over time, **estar** should be used instead of **ser**.
The subject **estos aguacates** is plural, so the correct verb form is **están**.
If you answer **son verdes**, the sentence means **"These avocados are green."** This describes their color rather than their temporary state of being unripe.
